Iowa Business Entity Search
The Iowa Secretary of State’s Business Entities Search has two steps: choose a search type, then enter your search. Search, results, a summary and a filing list worked without a login or payment in our review.

Search methods offered
- Search by Business NameEnter the business name. The helper text suggests the first few letters or words.
- Search by Business NumberEnter the complete number, numbers only.
How to search
- Open Iowa’s Business Entities Search using the button above.
- Choose Search by Business Name and enter the name or distinctive words. If you know the identifier, choose Search by Business Number and enter the complete number.
- Select Search.
- Review Business No., Name, Status, Type and Legal Name. The Type column describes the kind of name record, not necessarily the legal organization structure.
- Select the linked Business No. to open the summary. Use the legal name and number to tell legal, former, reserved and fictitious names apart.
- Review the dates, jurisdiction, registered agent and principal office. The navigation also offers Address, Agent, Filings, Names, Officers, Protected Series, Stock and Summary.
- Use Search Again to start over. Print Certificate of Existence is a separate paid certificate, not the basic print function.
What you can expect to find
- The results table has the columns Business No., Name, Status, Type and Legal Name. A search for a large company name returned 199 results at 25 per page. The list included legal, reserved and fictitious names, and a business number can appear in more than one row.
- A summary can show the business number, legal name, status, name type, state of incorporation, a Modified flag, expiration date, effective and filing dates and times, and the applicable Iowa Code chapter or entity classification. It also shows a Names table, the Registered Agent or Reserving Party, and the Principal Office. Some fields were blank.
- The Filings page showed Cert. No., Pages, Filing Date, Effective Date and Type. Our sample listed a certificate of organization, a biennial report and an amendment. We didn’t open the Officers, Stock or Protected Series sections.
Limitations, fees and notices
- Search, results, the summary and the filing list were free. The official FAQ lists a purchased certificate at $5. We did not establish online copy or certification prices, and filing fees are separate.
- The official help says a search returns at most 1,000 results, removes leading noise words and trailing corporation endings, and explains that results can represent different kinds of names. The database covers active and inactive entity records and trademarks registered with the office.
- The search page describes names “beginning with” the letters you enter, but our test also returned names with the word later in the name. Enter all or part of the business name and don’t rely on prefix-only matching.
- Document images are subject to Social Security number redaction before publication. The office is a filing repository and does not guarantee the correctness or completeness of submitted information or the filer’s authority, so appearing in the database does not validate a filing.
- The public search form has no status, date, city, agent, officer, entity-type or exact/contains filters.
- An ordinary search is not a final name-availability determination.
