New Jersey Business Entity Search

New Jersey offers a free business-name index for registered entities and a separate Business Records Service for paid status reports, standing certificates and document copies. The free index is a lookup of names, not a free detailed record: in our research it showed only business name, entity ID, city, type and incorporated date.

Search methods offered

  • Business NameFree index search. A wildcard is added automatically after your text, and the form permits % as a wildcard. The state’s FAQ says matching ignores case and needs at least two characters.
  • Keyword SearchFree index search with up to five keywords. Per the state’s FAQ, results contain all keywords anywhere in the name. Wildcards are not allowed.
  • Entity IdFree index search by exact match. The state’s FAQ says the full 10-digit ID is required, with no partial or wildcard searches.
  • Business Name AvailabilityA separate online service for checking a proposed name. It is not the registered-business index.
  • Business Records Service searchesA separate service for paid reports and documents. Visible methods were Business Name, Entity ID, Principal Name, Registered Agent and Associated Name. Associated Name is described as an alternate, fictitious or previous name used by the business.

How to search

  1. Open the official New Jersey Business Name Search using the button above.
  2. Under Search Registered Businesses, select Business Name, Keyword Search or Entity Id.
  3. For a name search, enter the beginning of the name. The form suggests leaving off endings such as Inc. or LLC unless you know the exact format.
  4. Select Search and review the table of matches.
  5. If the search returns more than 500 matches, enter a more specific name and search again.
  6. Use the Show entries selector, sortable headings and Previous and Next to browse the displayed matches.
  7. To get legal status, registered agent or filing history, use the separate Business Records Service, which offers paid reports and documents.

What you can expect to find

  • The free results table has five columns: Business Name, Entity Id, City, Type and Incorporated Date. Some City cells were blank.
  • Show entries offers 10, 25, 50 or 100, and every column heading sorts. A search for “Lincoln” returned a warning of more than 500 results with only the first 500 displayed, and the count read “Showing 1 to 10 of 500 entries.” The 500 is a display limit, not the total number of matches.
  • The Type column showed codes that the page did not expand, so this guide does not define them. Do not read Type as a status.
  • The free results showed no status column, registered agent, address detail or document link. Clicking a business name in the free table did not open a record.
  • Registered-business results include matching businesses regardless of status or name availability, according to the state’s FAQ.
  • The Business Records Service let us run an entity ID search and view its results page without signing in. That page listed Business Name, Entity ID, City, Type and Original Filing Date, with checkboxes to order a status report or copies. We stopped there, so we did not open or purchase a status report or any documents.

Limitations, fees and notices

  • Searching the registered-business index is different from the other name services. The registered-business search finds names already in the database, and a match or no match does not establish that a name is available. The online name-availability lookup checks a proposed name against the formation service using different rules. A name-availability certificate is a separately priced paid service. A name reservation is also a separate paid action, and searching does not reserve a name.
  • Official guidance describes a Business Entity Status Report as including name, status, original formation date, annual report information, registered agent, associated name and filing history. We did not open a report, so this is the state’s description and not something we saw.
  • Published fees, per the state’s fee schedule: status report $5 plus a $1.25 online convenience fee; standing certificate $25 for corporations and limited partnerships, $50 for LLC and LLP short form and $100 for LLC and LLP long form. Other copy charges may apply. We completed no checkout, so we can’t confirm final totals.
  • The state’s help page says annual reports filed through the Annual Reports Service can be downloaded there for up to 90 days after filing. After that it points to a status report or standing certificate. This is not a permanent archive of annual report images.
  • We saw no free document image viewer, and we did not verify which document images exist for any entity.
  • The index covers entities formed or authorized with the state, such as corporations, nonprofits, limited partnerships, LLCs and LLPs. It is not a complete directory of every New Jersey business. Treasury says sole-proprietor trade names are filed with the county clerk, so those and other DBAs are not promised to appear here.
  • No login or payment was needed for the free index and results, and no CAPTCHA appeared in our research. That describes our session, and a challenge could appear at other times. The Business Records Service shows New User and Login links.
  • The entity page we reached stayed on the general service address, so we did not find a lasting link to a specific entity.
  • The state advises allowing two business days for electronic filings to appear in status reports.

This guide is based on a browser research report on the official New Jersey sites, documenting a completed “Lincoln” search and inspection of the separate status-report search results. No detailed record, status report or document was opened, and no order or payment was made. Report contents and fees are official guidance, not live observations.
