Colorado Business Entity Search

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Business Database Search covers business entities, trade names and trademarks in one search, with an advanced search for registered agents and individuals. The official business page links to it. Basic search, record details and filing history worked without a login or payment in our review.

How to search

  1. Open the Business Database Search using the button above.
  2. Enter the 11-digit ID if you know it. Otherwise enter a business name or one or two distinctive words.
  3. The official tips suggest leaving out punctuation, grouping initials together, avoiding Boolean logic, and using Advanced Search if the basic name search doesn’t find the business.
  4. Select Search.
  5. In the results, select the ID number for the record you want. A name can appear in several rows for different events, so compare the status, form and formation date.
  6. On the detail page, review the status, jurisdiction, addresses and registered agent.
  7. Select Filing history and documents to see the events. If an event has a document number, select it to view the filing.

What you can expect to find

  • Results show ID Number, Document Number, Name, Event, Status, Form and Formation Date. They can mix business and trade-name records, and an event row (for example Name Changed, Withdrawn, Expired or Good Standing) is not the entity’s current summary status. Results can be sorted by column heading, and more than 20 matches are paginated.
  • A detail page can show the name, Status, Formation date, ID number, Form, Periodic report month, Jurisdiction, principal office street and mailing addresses, and the Registered Agent’s name, street address and mailing address. It also has links for Filing history and documents, Trade names, good-standing certificates, certified copies, and filing and notification services.
  • The filing history table has the columns Event, Date Filed, Date Posted, Effective Date, Document # (click to view) and Comment, with pagination. Some events have no document number, and the history includes status changes and report-due notifications.

Limitations, fees and notices

  • The basic search is free. Official Secretary of State material has described free business and registered-agent searches and free online good-standing certificates and certified copies, but that material is older and we didn’t confirm the current terms or complete a certificate download. Check the official order forms before ordering.
  • Filing charges and special paid services are separate from the lookup. We have not confirmed any current formation, reservation, special copy or expedited-service fee.
  • Advanced Search shows a reCAPTCHA component. Basic search showed no challenge in our test.
  • The search page said paper documents had been processed through 10/29/2026 on the date we checked. That is a dated indicator, not a promise about how current the database is.
  • The site says it is a filing registry and cannot certify whether a business is operating legally. A Good Standing status does not speak to a business’s reputation or licensing.
  • The official search tips exclude name-availability searches. Use the separate name availability tool, which we didn’t test.

Research for this guide used the official Colorado sites in a web browser. A name search, one corporation record and its filing history were tested. The coloradosos.gov address on the button is the one the agency links to; the full test used the sos.state.co.us address.
